To Get a Copy of Slideshow

Hi Everyone,

On Monday, if you'd like--bring your flash drive or a blank CD to get a copy of the slideshow. I'm going to save it in powerpoint version for you, not the video that I posted on here or YouTube. And I'm bringing my laptop to do that. Flash drives are preferred, it's faster and more convenient for me. Having it in ppt. version is better because the pictures are clearer and of better quality. There'll be the same pictures, I even added a few more of some folks I didn't see too often in the previous one I made. The only difference is probably length and transition of the slides.

I have the ATI exam that starts at 0730 and I'll probably be done with it by 0830, then I will have a two-hour break and start the final at 1030-12ish. All on campus.

Toy Drive for Family Ties...

The Student Nursing Association will be bringing toys for the children at Family Ties.

Donations

If you are interested in helping a child in need have a better Christmas, please bring a new toy to the Nursing Office. Family Ties will also accept lightly used items. The children range in age from infants to pre-schoolers.

The SNA would like to collect at least 25 toys
The toys would be given to the children but any large items (like wagons or tricycles) would stay at Family Ties for all the children to use.

We will be collecting toys until December 17th. Please do not wrap these gifts. Family Ties personnel need to see each gift before distributing it. Just bring your donated items to the Nursing Office and there will be a large box to deposit them in.

Here comes Santa Claus!

SNA has arranged to have a Santa Claus show up at Family Ties on December 18th at around 9:30am to hand out candy canes and pose for pictures with the kids. Santa could use a few more helpers!

Hello Everyone,

Vanessa and I would like to thank you for taking your time to send us pictures. Greatly appreciated. I do notice that there are still some of you who are not in any of the pictures at all and some of you have done your best to provide me with the pictures of those fellow students. However, I can't guarantee that all of you will be included in the slideshow because obviously if I don't have pictures of you, then I don't have anything to work with. Last Call for Pictures for Slideshow...

Vanessa and I are putting together pictures for slideshow and today, as we did a run through of the pictures we're using so far...we realized that it is really not enough. Meaning that the pictures that I've collected isn't covering all 80 of us in the graduating class, only about 60% of the class.

So, as a final reminder, I would like to encourage you to bring your cameras out into clinical setting..or lecture and start snapping pictures and e-mail them to me if you can. Otherwise, the pictures in slideshow will be of the same people over and again. I know you don't want to see that because this ceremony is a celebration of all 80 of us before we part our separate ways; and together, we have accomplished a great goal in life--please do what you need to and what you can. Thank you!

Deadline again is Friday, November 14th--If I don't have your CD of pictures or a message in my inbox with your pictures by then, nothing else after that!!

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday for Tracy native
Cynthia Ann Romena, 30, who died Oct. 24 in Monterey.

Born in Tracy, Mrs. Romena graduated from Tracy High School and later
received her bachelor’s degree in science at California State University,
Monterey Bay.

She lived in Stockton for a while, and later lived in Monterey for five
years.

Her family says she liked the outdoors, skeet shooting and riding her
motorcycle.

Mrs. Romena is survived by her husband, Jason Garbe of Monterey; son,
Anthony Jay Garbe of Monterey; father, Phillip Romena of Tracy; mother,
Isabel Romena of Stockton; and sister, Diane Romena of Tracy.

Thursday’s vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. at Fry Memorial Chapel, 550 S.
Central Ave., followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Bernard’s Catholic
Church, 163 W. Eaton Ave. Burial will be private.

Donations in Mrs. Romena’s name can be sent to the Anthony Jay College Fund,
1735 Camelia Drive, Tracy 95376.

Deadline for Pictures for Slideshow

Hello All,

Deadline for your pictures to be incorporated into the slideshow is Friday, November 14th. If you have less than 6 pictures, you can e-mail it to me. If you have more than that please put it on a disc. I have gotten a lot of pictures from some of you already..thanks for that.

On another note, I was told that the VN and PsychTech Students are going to decide on the final songs we've chosen. In other words, we don't know whether the songs we voted on will be used or not, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that.

Thank you for your votes today. I'd like to make an announcement that the voting session for songs for pinning ceremony is now officially closed. The final results for songs are as follows:

#1) Viva La Vida by Coldplay (instrumental) 24 votes--I have gotten many suggestions to use this one as our opening music, which makes sense to me also because it is upbeat

Wanted to stress to all of you that if you are sending pictures to me for the slideshow please cut it to a minimum. We have a class of 90 students with only 5-6 minutes for slideshow presentation during pinning ceremony, so I cannot promise you that all of your pictures will be in the slideshow. It has to be fair for everyone. This is a big class. Down the road, during the process of working on this slideshow, when I do see that there are spaces and time for a few more pictures, I will add some in. Hi again everyone,

I was asked on how we vote for graduation songs...We are actually going to look for 3 songs. Walk in, walk out, and slideshow. So, if you want to submit any songs and don't have access to blog, just e-mail me the titles and artists by the end of this week. I will put all the song titles that got submitted to the blog or to my e-mail on a list on paper. Then will make copies of it and pass it out in class for all of you to circle your votes. I think this would be much better because everyone will be in class on Monday and we get a chance to do this before we part. Slideshow for Graduation

Hey everyone,

Wanted to let you know that Steve and I have volunteered to put a slideshow together for our pinning ceremony. Please let us know if you have any concerns or questions with regards to this decision.

So, send us pictures you would like to have in the slideshow, prospectively before our Thanksgiving break. I don't know what the max time is for this presentation...but will try to keep it up to 5 minutes. Can't be too long because our pinning ceremony is with the other students from Psych Tech and Voc. Nursing..need to leave some space for theirs also. If I don't get any pictures from you by the end of November, and you don't see yourself in the slideshow..I don't wanna hear it. Save the drama.

Along with this, Vanessa and I have talked about graduation songs to put with the slideshow. I am not sure how many other songs we need to choose but will ask Mrs. Neville this coming Monday about that.

"Advance Directives – Terminology from LMH Website

Artificial Nutrition and Hydration is when food and water are given to a person through a tube or needle because the person is no longer able to swallow.

Autopsy is an examination done on a body to find out the cause of death.

Comfort Care is care that helps to keep a person comfortable and control pain.

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is emergency treatment that tries to restart a person's breathing or heartbeat after they have stopped. CPR can include pushing on the chest, putting a tube down the throat, and other emergency steps.

Health Care Appointment is an advance directive in which you appoint someone to make medical decisions for you if the time ever comes when you cant make them yourself. It is also called a "Health Care Proxy" or a "Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare."

Life Sustaining Treatment is any medical treatment that is used to keep a person from dying. A breathing machine, CPR, and artificial nutrition and hydration are examples of lifesustaining treatments.

Health Care Directive is an advance directive in which you say what forms of medical treatment you do or do not want if you become terminally ill or are in a persistent vegetative state.

Organ and Tissue Donation is when a person permits his/her organs (such as eyes or kidneys) and other parts of the body (such as skin) to be removed after death to be transplanted to another person or used for education or research.

Persistent Vegetative State is when a person is unconscious with no hope of regaining consciousness even with medical treatment. The body may move and eyes may be open, but as far as anyone can tell, the person can't think or respond.

Being Terminally Ill means having an injury or illness that has no cure and from which doctors expect the person to die, even with medical treatment.

"Hey all you 2nd rotation OB peeps....greetings and good luck in N8! The theory lecture goes verbatim with the syllabus so you don't have to take class notes from stratch (yeah!). Ms. Batson's tests are not just all multiple choice. There are a lot of fill-in and short answer questions; know your interventions and rationales (as always!). The third test was the hardest and longest because it had the most writing involved. There's a lot of busy work in clinical but the 3 most time-consuming things are: 1) drug worksheet that has to be filled out before your first clinical day, 2) the neonatal theory worksheet (what's normal in a head-to-toe newborn assessment v. what's not normal)...this has to be filled out before your assigned day in the nursery and 3) the oral presentation (because you have to include recent/pertinent research related to your topic). If anyone has any questions, post them on the blog....have fun!"

Article 2. Scope of Regulation 2725. Legislative Declaration; Practice of Nursing; Functions

In amending this section at the 1973-74 session, the Legislature recognizes that nursing is a dynamic field, the practice of which is continually evolving to include more sophisticated patient care activities. It is the intent of the Legislature in amending this section at the 1973-74 session to provide clear legal authority for functions and procedures that have common acceptance and usage. It is the legislative intent also to recognize the existence of overlapping functions between physicians and registered nurses and to permit additional sharing of functions within organized health care systems that provide for collaboration between physicians and registered nurses. These organized health care systems include, but are not limited to, health facilities licensed pursuant to Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 1250) of Division 2 of the Health and Safety Code, clinics, home health agencies, physicians' offices, and public or community health services.
The practice of nursing within the meaning of this chapter means those functions, including basic health care, that help people cope with difficulties in daily living that are associated with their actual or potential health or illness problems or the treatment thereof, and that require a substantial amount of scientific knowledge or technical skill, including all of the following:
1. Direct and indirect patient care services that ensure the safety, comfort, personal hygiene, and protection of patients; and the performance of disease prevention and restorative measures.
2. Direct and indirect patient care services, including, but not limited to, the administration of medications and therapeutic agents, necessary to implement a treatment, disease prevention, or rehabilitative regimen ordered by and within the scope of licensure of a physician, dentist, podiatrist, or clinical psychologist, as defined by Section 1316.5 of the Health and Safety Code.
3. The performance of skin tests, immunization techniques, and the withdrawal of human blood from veins and arteries.
4. Observation of signs and symptoms of illness, reactions to treatment, general behavior, or general physical condition, and (A) determination of whether the signs, symptoms, reactions, behavior, or general appearance exhibit abnormal characteristics; and (B) implementation, based on observed abnormalities, of appropriate reporting, or referral, or standardized procedures, or changes in treatment regimen in accordance with standardized procedures, or the initiation of emergency procedures.
"Standardized procedures," as used in this section, means either of the following:
1. Policies and protocols developed by a health facility licensed pursuant to Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 1250) of Division 2 of the Health and Safety Code through collaboration among administrators and health professionals including physicians and nurses.
2. Policies and protocols developed through collaboration among administrators and health professionals, including physicians and nurses, by an organized health care system which is not a health facility licensed pursuant to Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 1250) of Division 2 of the Health and Safety Code.
The policies and protocols shall be subject to any guidelines for standardized procedures that the Division of Licensing of the Medical Board of California and the Board of Registered Nursing may jointly promulgate. If promulgated the guidelines shall be administered by the Board of Registered Nursing.
Nothing in this section shall be construed to require approval of standardized procedures by the Division of Licensing of the Medical Board of California, or by the Board of Registered Nursing.

2725.1. Dispensing Drugs or Devices; Registered Nurses; Limitations

Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a registered nurse may dispense drugs or devices upon an order by a licensed physician and surgeon when the nurse is functioning within a licensed clinic as defined in paragraphs (1) and (2) of subdivision (a) of Section 1204 of, or within a clinic as defined in subdivision (b) or (c) of Section 1206, of the Health and Safety Code.

No clinic shall employ a registered nurse to perform dispensing duties exclusively. No registered nurse shall dispense drugs in a pharmacy, keep a pharmacy, open shop, or drugstore for the retailing of drugs or poisons. No registered nurse shall compound drugs. Dispensing of drugs by a registered nurse shall not include substances included in the California Uniform Controlled Substances Act (Division 10 (commencing with Section 11000) of the Health and Safety Code). Nothing in this section shall exempt a clinic from the provisions of Article 3.5 (commencing with Section 4063) of Chapter 9.

I hope you are all still hanging in there with N6 and N7, just 4-5 more weeks. As Heidi have asked, I am to post more lodging options for those who have not booked a room or still looking around for best rates. Here, I have a hotel called:

It is located in the city about 10-15 minutes away from SFSU. I have not made any blocks for extra rooms. I found this through the College Hotel Guide website. Hey everybody! Congratulations on your hard work and dedication which has brought you this far! You are almost there, can you see the light?

I just want to talk about the Davis NCLEX review course in SF. There were 45 from my class that went. We went after graduation and never had the opportunity that you have to participate in their program in our 3rd semester. This is a great presentation that is put on, and the advantage of going early is that you will get to use and put into practice, everything that you will learn there, throughout your last semester and beyond. If you wait until after you graduate to attend, you will lose out on the opportunity of using new test taking strategies, study methods, memory tricks and critical thinking skills that you will learn there. You will also gain access to a huge test bank which encompasses every subject enabling you to find and identify incorrect thought processes and possible test taking weaknesses. You will then be able to correct them before it is too late and time to take THE BIG ONE!

The SF review is a great way to reinforce and cement in your mind, all of the hard work from your past and present learning experiences from Peds, Psych and med surg, before you start to forget, as you will by the time you get through the 4th semester.

The 4th semester is very stressful in a busy sort of way which makes it very hard to review and retain your N4, N5, N6 and N7 knowledge. These subjects will be presented by multiple Nurse speakers who will review subject matter while teaching you how to think and choose the correct answers. Hello everyone,
I am cordinating the paperwork for the "highly recommended" Davis Nclex review being held at San Francisco State University on June 3, 4, 5, & 6, 2008. Unfortunately, I just received their information (sorry for the late notice) and there is an impending deadline of MARCH 31ST to submit registration forms and money. We must have at least 10 people to sign up by March 31st in order to secure a rate of $200 per person otherwise the rate will increase to $250 per person. I have spoken with some 4th semester students who attended this review (about 40 from their class attended) and they really enjoyed the review. They found it helpful in identifying their strengths and weaknesses as this review not only covers testing taking strategies but nursing content.
Davis Nclex review is also offering an online follow up review in January 2009 for those who attend the June 2008 review. They couldn't give me a set price but I was told it would be no more than $100. The review would be offered online for 30 days so students would not have to go back to San Francisco. It think this is a great idea considering most of us will be getting ready to sit for boards in January and this will be a good refresher.

Because there seems to be some confusion as to what is happening with SNA, I wanted to address the priority issues for retaining our club charter.1st - General membership meeting on Feb 4 @ 1pm in Locke 229 is scheduled. EVERYONE interested in SNA should attend.

1st - The priority agenda item for this meeting is getting new officers elected and in place. Until new officers are elected nothing can be accomplished.

2nd - Once we have new officers, a new club application must be filled out and new signature cards submitted to Student Activities.

3rd - For the SNA to retain it's charter we must commit to one Club Rush Day time slot. Club Rush is NEXT WEEK. That means one or several people must be set up at a table in the Quad between 9am and 11am to talk to students and promote the club. All items necessary for this event are on hand in the locked cabinets, but we can not schedule our Club Rush time until the signed club apps and signature cards are completed.

4th - ICC mtgs are scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month at 1:30pm. The first mtg was not held as scheduled, so that leaves the meeting next Thursday that an SNA member MUST attend.I am willing to help fill in these gaps as this is short notice, but we must get new officers elected, in place and up to speed re: our obligations and requirements to the ICC/Student Activities Office.

Hello Everyone! I know that you are all busy studying for finals right now...But just wanted to let you all know that we have just one more year--then we'll be pinned in Dec. 2008. We need to start taking pictures of clinical, skills, lectures, parties, etc. so that we can have a wonderful slideshow for graduation--And yes, we are all under some stress now, but we are going through this together and in the end we'll be proud of ourselves...I have built many meaningful friendships along the way and I'm pretty sure some of you have also...So, keep taking pictures...and I wish you all the best of luck on your final exam!

We lost our Treasurer to the rigors of N7 so that means we have a vacancy that YOU may fill. Please review the description of duties below and if you can commit to a few extra hours here and there for SNA officer activities then feel free to contact me @ goshblogit@gmail.com or come to the meeting and raise your hand.
Treasurer: Keeps financial records, makes deposits and payment requests for club events, manages inventory and ordering.
We will also have an ICC update and vote on support of a member going to the 3 day CSNA conference in San Jose.
SNA gear will be raffled along with a fleece jacket to celebrate the change in weather!

Your Student Nursing Association will be presenting a PDA party Sept. 17th 1-3pm in Locke 314.

Bonnie Boss has agreed to come give her PDA presentation and other SJDC students will be on hand to give a PDA "show and tell". You will get to see and hear what has worked for others before you and what has not. Come ask all those PDA related questions as well as make some suggestions for future meetings.

All are welcome to attend, if you still have not registered for the SNA, we will be happy to register you at the door.

Just a reminder/passing along info... We have access to ATIs practice/demo tests online with the codes we were given at the beginning of the semester (if you have not already checked out the tests). There are good questions/coverage of material and its also a chance to see what the questions will be like. There are two practice tests that I know of; RN Fundamentals of Nursing, and RN Fundamentals of Nursing 2.0. When you log into ATIs website just click on the "take assessment" button within the left column and enter the codes from below. We were all given the same codes and passwords so if you cannot find them here they are:
